I listed my top 10 all time favourite Taylor Swift songs. It is not based on the number of YouTube hits, or the number of downloads, or the number of awards the song had received. I knew her music (released or unreleased) ‘cause I’m a certified Swiftie here.😉 By the way, today marks her 24th birthday! Maligayang kaarawan Tay!
Here it goes.
There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired lonely place
Walls of insincerity,
Shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face
All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you
Sometimes, this preconceived idea of another dull gathering can turn out to be the highlight of our day. Just like this song, which based on my searching prowess is for Adam of Owl City. Enchanted is basically about the feeling of liking someone but feeling frustrated at the same time for not knowing if it’ll be reciprocated.
I am not the kind of girl
Who should be rudely barging in on a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy
Who should be marrying the wrong girl
I like Taylor’s vocal here. Not her normal type of voice. This song is about her game plan if she’ll come to be in a position of watching the man she loves marrying the wrong woman. It’s a question of whether should I speak now or forever hold my peace? Obviously, Tay chooses the former.
You, with your words like knives
And swords and weapons that you use against me
You have knocked me off my feet again
Got me feeling like I’m nothing
You, with your switching sides
And your wildfire lies and your humiliation
You have pointed out my flaws again
As if I don’t already see them
Critics said that Taylor can’t sing. As a result, she won two Grammys for this song. Is it her way of saying this song goes out for you? Although I agree that her vocal is not really strong. But like she said, she’s a writer. So her voice is just a way to get those lyrics across. So don’t be mean people.
And what I love most about this song is the fact that it was released at the time when I was searching for an outlet to describe those bad creatures in my world. Good timing. Haha.
PICTURE TO BURN
State the obvious, I didn’t get my perfect fantasy
I realize you love yourself more than you could ever love me
So go and tell your friends that I’m obsessive and crazy
That’s fine I’ll tell mine that you’re gay!
I can never imagine Taylor Swift being soooo mean. But I think sometimes it’s okay not to be toooo nice. Especially if the other person just pushes you to give what they deserve. And I cannot agree more when she said that, “I really do try to be a nice person… but if you break my heart, hurt my feelings, or are really mean to me, I’m going to write a song about you. Haha. This song is the perfect example.”
YOU BELONG WITH ME
But she wears short skirts
I wear t-shirts
She’s cheer captain
And I’m on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you’re looking for has been here the whole time
This is definitely one of her most successful single and her most watched YouTube video. If you’re a girl it is so easy to get hook to this hairbrush song. Especially living in today’s world, when the “why is she almost perfect?” is everywhere to be seen. In the television, magazines, internet and billboards. Felt like picture perfect girl is hunting you saying “I’m everything and you’re nothing.”
So here is Taylor Swift song expressing what came through in our mind in one way or another.
I definitely love how Taylor played with those words. It’s fun to sing those lyrics, definitely catchy and appealing.
THE WAY I LOVED YOU
But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain
And it’s 2am and I’m cursing your name
You’re so in love that you act insane
And that’s the way I loved you
This song is about being in a comfortable, fairytale type of relationship with a very nice guy… but you feel nothing. So there you were in a relationship but your heart is wandering somewhere thinking about this crazy, complicated and impossible man.
I love this song because the feeling is so real. And as complicated as I am, I cannot imagine myself without those complications in my relationship. I learn to grow through it so would my crazy, complicated and impossible relationship.
Sometimes we create this idea of “perfect relationship” only to realize that in perfection, happiness is not guaranteed.
We’re happy free confused and lonely at the same time
It’s miserable and magical
This song was released when I was 22 years old. But that’s not the reason why I love this song. The reason is because it somehow speaks about being at this stage of life.
My favourite lyrics would be happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time. Four contrasting words contained in a single feeling. I believe that absolute feeling cannot be achieved cause it will always be a combination of everything. Like when you’re excited, you might be feeling nervous too. Or happy but discontented at the same time. So yes, it’s possible to have different feelings all at the same time.
We’re drivin’ down the road
I wonder if you know
I’m tryin’ so hard not to get caught up now
But you’re just so cool
Run your hands through your hair
Absent mindedly makin’ me want you
Tay wrote this song when she’s not dating anyone. This is her ideal kind of date. And the hidden message of this song is “I loved you before I met you.”
So “Fearless” is basically about fearlessness of falling in love. Regardless of how many relationships you had. And despite the number of times that you have been hurt. Take heart. Cause you will fall in love again. And when you do. I tell you, it’s fearless.
NEVER GROW UP
Oh darling, don’t you ever grow up
Don’t you ever grow up, just stay this little
Oh darling, don’t you ever grow up
Don’t you ever grow up, it could stay this simple
I won’t let nobody hurt you, won’t let no one break your heart
And no one will desert you
Just try to never grow up, never grow up
It’s not that I don’t really wanna grow up. It’s just that I want to forever be my mother’s child.
Whenever I hear this song, it puts me in melancholy mode. Cause when pressure, anxiety and expectations in life come without mercy I can only count on my Mama as my constant ally. Things are simpler when we’re younger, we always say. But gone are the days when eat, play and sleep are just our usual concern.
So this song is the expression of the other side of me. That though other people regard me as a grown up lady, time still comes when I just want to be my mother’s little child again.
Our song is the slamming screen door,
Sneakin’ out late, tapping on your window
When we’re on the phone and you talk real slow
’cause it’s late and your mama don’t know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date: “Man, I didn’t kiss her, when I should have”
And when I got home … ‘fore I said amen
Asking God if He could play it again
“Play it again” is the last line of the chorus. As a result, I kept on playing it over and over again as it became my Taylor Swift’s favourite song and my ringing tone for three years now. How’s that?
There’s nothing really deep about this song or something I could identify with, but the totality or the individuality of “Our Song” is something special. I love the combination of words, the music and the instruments. It’s a feel good song that you would want to sing along with and play all over again.
